See picture with text instruction below:

  1. Sketch a simple outline pumpkin shape using your pencil, make sure to include clearly defined pumpkin ‘ribs’ and a stem. Use a picture of a pumpkin for reference, or use the template below as a guide. The sketch should be very light.

  2. When you are happy with the pumpkin sketch, tidy up any mistakes with the eraser. Also use the eraser if you have pressed too hard while sketching. The drawing should be only faintly visible for the next stage.

  3. Outline the pumpkin ‘ribs’ of the pencil sketch with an orange watercolour brush pen.

  4. Outline the pumpkin stem with a brown watercolour brush pen. Add a few lines along the stem for texture, then use a lighter brown, or yellow, to fill in the gaps between the lines.

  5. Using the watercolour brush pens, fill in the pumpkin ribs with a mixture of yellow and orange. Don’t worry too much about how it looks at this stage. The colours will blend later and create interesting patterns.

  6. Dip you watercolour brush in some clean water and use it to wet the entire pumpkin drawing. Make sure you cover all bits of the drawing with water.

  7. Let the painting dry fully before moving on to the next step.

  8. Use the black ink pen, or brush pen, to draw the outline of the pumpkin, refer back to your original picture reference or template if needed.

Variations:

  • Use different colours - try making yellow, green or red pumpkins.

  • Add some writing with the black in pen, for example ‘Happy Halloween’ or 'Trick Or Treaters Welcome’
